Learning the Tricks of Highlighting at Sephora
I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve never been a big fan of highlighting. It’s not that I don’t like the look of it, it’ just that my skin can get a little too oily. Oily skin plus highlighters don’t always equal a good for me. However, after attending the Highlighting class at Sephora on Michigan Avenue in Chicago, I can create the perfect highlight without making my skin look extra oily. In fact, my skin looked amazing!
During the class we learned about three different highlighting techniques from the hilarious and amazingly talented PRO Artist Jeffrey English! He had everyone laughing and having a good time, which made the event more fun. The three techniques used were: Dewy Glow, Holographic Glow, and Shimmer Glow. With each technique Jefferey featured the best products and tools to use, which we also got to place with a little bit at our station. Always fun!
After learning about highlighting we got paired up with someone at Sephora to help create one of the looks. I had my makeup done by Shayla who was the nicest person and did an amazing job. I have oily skin so I’ve always been a little afraid of highlighter.
She did my face makeup using the Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer in Nude and applied it with the Sephora Pro Foundation #47 brush. Then applied the IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Under Eye Illumination Full Coverage Anti-Aging Waterproof Concealer in medium using the Sephora PRO Airbrush Concealer #57 brush. I do have a bit of redness so she used a Laura Mercier powder to get rid of the redness. This has probably been the best powder for me in terms of getting rid of the little bit of redness that I get around the cheek area. For bronzer she used Cover FX, unfortunately I didn’t get the name of it. Lastly, she added the Hourglass GIRL Lip Style in Activist to my lips. This looked like a “my lips but better” shade and I absolutely loved it!
To highlight she used the new Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Volume II Skin Twinkle. This palette is absolutely stunning. The first two shades look amazing on my skin tone, but the other two are a bit dark, but can be used as a shadow. In fact, she used the third shade in this palette as an eye shadow. The highlight was subtle and perfect for someone with combination oily skin. After today I’ll be rocking highlighter since I know what types of highlighters to look for, the shades, and how to use them.
A massive thank you to the Sephora team for hosting the event and inviting me and providing a gift card to do a little shopping. I had such an amazing time! If you’re ever in the downtown Chicago area, please visit the Michigan Avenue store, they’re all so nice there!
What is your current go-to highlighter?
